A short tutorial / explainer video about our Solidworks to VR process. After researching a bit, we discovered a fantastic plugin for Unreal Studio called Datasmith. The plugin is free but extremely powerful. It supports a ton of different file formats from loads of software packages. Datasmith gives the user a high level of control when meshing models. It’s tessellation is clean, it makes great auto-generated light maps and maintains assembly hierarchies from Solidworks.
It’s by far the best way we’ve found to convert Solidworks parts and assemblies into clean usable meshes for real-time 3D viz. We’ve also found this to be the best method for converting Solidworks models for use in Maya for traditional 3D pre-rendered work.
