How to: Pipe Solidworks to UE4 (VR)

Quick tutorial and talk about moving SolidWorks parts and assemblies into Unreal Engine (and other 3D packages) using Datasmith for high-quality real-time 3D and VR visualization.

Since picking up our SW package we’ve been trying various techniques on how to port models built in SolidWorks, into our VR authoring tool of choice, Unreal Engine. From time to time, we create VR visualizations of environments and we thought it would be awesome to extend the offering to product and package viz as well.

Of the many techniques we tried, we found that the Datasmith plugin (for Unreal Studio) works best.

It’s something that seems like it should be relatively simple to do but there’s very little info out there at the time of this video and many ways to skin the cat. In our experiments, we encountered many methods that just yielded really crummy results. Hopefully this video helps limit your trial and error.
